  1. Congratulations Fall 2019 WIL Graduates!

On Friday, November 22, we celebrated the leadership journey of 30 incredible women who graduated from our Women in Leadership (WIL) program. The ceremony took place at the LA84 Foundation, who also hosted our WIL cohort throughout the program (thanks, LA84!). We are inspired by these women and  their dedication to their leadership development.

Coro’s Women in Leadership supports the leadership development of women across Southern California, establishing a pipeline for professional advancement, and creating a cross-sector network of women who support each other’s leadership development.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to these womens’ journey. We’re excited to welcome them to the Coro family! Congratulations!

  2. Congratulations 2018 Youth Fellows!

On August 3rd, we graduated our second cohort of Youth Fellows who spent the last six weeks navigating the varied sectors in the region and learning to work creatively and across differences to get things done. The ceremony was held at the California Endowment, where Youth Fellows met daily to learn about Coro tools and debrief on their experiences. At the ceremony, program participants shared personal items that they chose to represent their leadership journey and dropped them into a time capsule, which they will revisit in ten years. Youth Fellows showcased their creativity and humor by making a video parodying the hit TV show “The Office” (watch below!), highlighting some of the Coro tools they learned over the last six weeks.

Huge thanks to everyone who helped make this program so impactful for these emerging leaders. We are so proud to welcome these 14 rising students to the Coro family, and look forward to following them on their leadership journey in the coming years. Congratulations!!

On Friday, June 5th, we celebrated the 12 remarkable Fellows who graduated from our 9-month experience-based leadership program in public affairs.  More than 50 people attended the graduation festivities at the new Spoke Bicycle Cafe in Frogtown (or Elysian Valley) located along the LA River.  The afternoon event was an intimate time shared with family, friends, placement supervisors, board members, and staff.  Each of the Fellows took a moment to reflect on his or her passage of self-discovery and honor those that mentored and guided along the way.

“I felt so honored to share our reflections and experiences with friends, family, and mentors, and to celebrate our journey with them. This experience was life-changing, and I know I’ve only just begun to understand the ways in which we have all grown.” – Ellen Riotto (FPPA ’15)

The late John Greenwood, and former executive director of Coro Southern California, once said, “The Coro graduation is an unusual event, compared to most graduations. If we have been successful this year, we have really messed up your life.”

    John was right.

Coro Fellows are predisposed to investigating every possible angle of a problem and involving those with whom they disagree in developing a solution.  It’s hard work.  These last nine months have trained the Fellows to actively listen to other points of view and work on solutions together.

As John said to graduating Fellows in 2011, “Because of this program you will be poised to resolve issues that are currently frustrating public affairs–the need is greater than ever; because of this program your life will forever, subtly, be changed. The program is over but your life in public affairs is just beginning.”

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(NEW YORK CITY, PITTSBURGH, ST. LOUIS, SAN FRANCISCO AND LOS ANGELES): One of the longest running and most prolific leadership development programs in the nation’s history, Coro is tremendously proud today to announce the emerging leaders who have been selected for its 69th class of Coro Fellows in Public Affairs. Selected from among a highly competitive pool of hundreds of top college graduates, the 64 participants in the 2015-1016 class of Coro Fellows hail from a wide array of universities from across the country.

The Coro Fellowship uses the community as a classroom to train the next generation of change makers. Today’s complex urban environments present constantly evolving challenges and opportunities, creating an increasing need for versatile leaders with the ability to forge connections and lead across the non-profit, business and government sectors. Competitively selected applicants will join an intimate cohort of 12  to 16 participants for the nine-month program, with each cohort encompassing a wide range of communities, interests, ideologies and experiences.

The Princeton Review said of Coro: “Every group has its ultimate challenge, an experience that defines those who participate as the most talented in their field. Track-and-field enthusiasts have the decathlon. Whiz kids have the Odyssey of the Mind competition. Fitness freaks have the Iron Man Triathlon. And aspiring public servants have the Coro Fellows Program.”

More than 10,000 alumni have graduated from Coro programs over the past 70 years. These alumni are currently serving as leaders in national/global businesses, nonprofit organizations, government agencies and elected public office. 9. Behind the Scenes of Coro’s First Inaugural Water Hackathon in 2014

Last November, Coro Southern California convened more than 200 people dedicated to the issue of water in California.  The 6th Annual Water Conference entitled “Surfacing the Solutions” featured two panel discussions, a “hackathon” presentation, and a luncheon where Coro recognized key leaders and stakeholders in the water management in Southern California. Co-chaired by Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles and Jeff Kightlinger, the general manager of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, Coro’s Water Conference brought together elected officials, water agencies, agricultural leaders and business executives invested in finding statewide solutions for California’s water future. The Water Conference merged several aspects of Coro’s core objectives: our expertise as a non-partisan convener to support cross-sectoral collaboration around public issues, and our strength and experience as a trainer of future leaders in public affairs.

Here is an exclusive behind the scenes look at the Coro Fellows working all night on the water hackathon

What is the Coro Hackathon?  The Coro Hackathon is a civic adaptation of the modern technical hackathon model.  With minds instead of computers and inquiry instead of coding, Coro Fellows explore and synthesize the logic of a given societal issue.  The Coro Fellows were given a challenge of presenting a solution between water experts and the consumers. As part of the first ever Coro Hackathon, the Fellows interviewed several water experts and people working on developing innovative solutions to water challenges.  They explored how to work across sectors to merge innovative mindsets with existing systems, deep subject knowledge, and technical expertise to create effective solutions to numerous public needs.
